You may well have heard of The Dog Mentor programme but with the help of B&C
Educational, your school dog could now be helping children learn geography skills!
The Dog Mentor and B&C Educational are partnering on a new initiative, bringing
geography to life whilst harnessing the benefits of a school dog.
What is The Dog Mentor?
The Dog Mentor is a company that has built upon the benefits of the human-animal
bond by providing children positive experiences with dogs that can help them educationally, developmentally, emotionally and socially.
The aim of The Dog Mentor is to create a completely universal offering for your school setting, which provides social, emotional and mental health wellbeing but also covers aspects of curriculum-based education in order to improve educational outcomes.
Its primary objective in schools is to cultivate a supportive and inclusive environment, which:
promotes emotional resilience
equips children with tools to manage stress and anxiety and
boosts academic achievement.
Numerous research studies have shown the value of using trained dogs in this way,
and the benefits are outlined below:

What is Dography?
Having seen the benefits of using trained dogs first-hand in schools and with
handfuls of positive testimonials from teachers having experienced a school dog,
the team at The Dog Mentor are now looking to expand their activities to
incorporate some elements of the formal curriculum.
Dography, which brings the dogs and geography together, is the first initiative to be
taken forward and will see six geography units transformed into school dog mentor
geography units. These units will be based on your school, its grounds, the
surrounding environment and your local area and, of course, feature your school dog.

The first six units are:
Young Geographers (EYFS)
My School (KS1)
My School Grounds (KS1)
Surrounding Environment (KS1)
Fieldwork Skills and Practice (KS1)
The Local Area (KS2)
Based on B&C Educational’s trusted Key to the National Curriculum geography
resources, these units will be National Curriculum compliant whilst embracing the
positives of dog mentorship and tailored specifically to your school.
When will the dog-centred geography units launch?
These first units will be complete and available for schools to purchase from April
2025, ready for outdoor fieldwork in the summer term. If your school would like to
be part of the new ‘Dography’ revolution, get in touch and we will send you details.
